Cody Cannon and guitarist Cody Tate brought their musical vision to fruition when drummer John Jeffers and bass guitarist Gary Brown joined them as members in 2008. From then on they started gigging across East Texas while slowly building up a following until key songs from their 2018 album Tornillo appeared in Kevin Costner’s cowboy TV show Yellowstone, catapulting Whiskey Myers into national awareness.
Whiskey Myers are an equal partnership: an intimate band who share in both the joys and sorrows they describe on their albums. That same closeness can be found in their studio performances where each song receives its own personalized sonic analysis to determine who will sing lead vocals and how instruments should blend with one another.
Its result is an album filled with songs that balance tough and tender, taking listeners on an emotional journey from start to finish. Songs such as “Shelter from the Rain” and “Colloquy” showcase the group’s more emotional side while “Hold on Tight” brings Led Zeppelin-like drumming reminiscent of their 1968 classic “When the Levee Breaks”.
Tornillo’s most streamed song, an opening rocker, takes listeners back to 2022: an era of economic upheaval and global destruction – yet, somehow, its protagonist, sounding not unlike actor Charlize Theron in her gruff American cowboy roles, remains unflappable: ‘How we gonna pay when interest rates gone higher than corn?” He sings as twin guitars reverberate in the background.
Whiskey Myers songs draw on both hard rock and small town experiences for inspiration; their lyrics speak directly to people’s lives while maintaining the band‘s signature blend of Texas Red Dirt country and Southern rock that can appeal to a broad base of fans.
Whiskey Myers spend much of their time touring, performing live and promoting their new album. Their live shows are truly electrifying; drawing audiences all across America. Yet they remain true to what has brought them success: writing, recording and performing as always.
