In an uncertain musical landscape, The Piano Guys have proved that classical music still has its place. Their videos have garnered millions of views on YouTube and Spotify; awards and accolades from publications like the New York Times and BuzzFeed; they sold out concerts across the world; they are known for upbeat classical-based mashups often performed unexpected places – like China’s Great Wall or beneath an Australian waterfall – and their unique brand of music with elaborate visuals has propelled their success to new heights.
The Piano Guys began as a two-man band consisting of pianist Jon Schmidt and cellist Steven Sharp Nelson who met while selling instruments in Utah music store. Soon thereafter they started creating videos featuring themselves playing together that quickly went viral on YouTube resulting in massive popularity for them both as performers.
They are a family-based group and use their popularity to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. They regularly speak on college campuses and at other venues to spread hope, joy, and love messages. Furthermore, The Piano Guys Foundation helps children while they also partake in other charitable endeavors.
Not surprisingly, members and friends of the Singapore Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were delighted to host an exciting fireside gathering on March 12, 2023. Both chapel and hall were filled with more than 350 attendees sharing an evening full of music, laughter and inspiration.
The evening began with The Piano Guys opening up by sharing how they became The Piano Guys. Their story is one to behold; from playing on every continent imaginable (even China’s Great Wall!) to producing music and visuals themselves; to entertaining with dad jokes; all took years of dedication before becoming The Piano Guys.
At each performance, guests were treated to an eclectic selection of classics, modern hits and original material – captivating their listeners from start to finish! Their performance left audiences mesmerized – it was impossible to choose just one favorite song from the set list! From Kung Fu Panda meets Chopin through to their spellbinding rendition of Summer Jam; their performances left no one indifferent!
Their performance of U2’s With or Without You left audience members goose-bumped, as did Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years. Additionally, they invited audience members to sing along and create an enjoyable and interactive experience.
They were joined by a choir from local schools and local vocalists, who all put on an astounding show with them. Even Tabernacle organist Richard Elliott joined in and performed an organ duet – moving audiences to tears!
