Joel Thomas Zimmerman was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario and soon after discovered an affinity for music and computers, becoming interested in producing tracks using computer-aided music software (CAM). By 1998 he had begun producing his own tracks using various computer-assisted music (CAM) programs – becoming widely renowned electronic music producer with his stage name deadmau5.
After graduating from Westlane Secondary School, Zimmerman worked at T-shirt printing shops and canneries in order to save up for studio equipment. He began composing music licensing companies before earning the moniker Deadmau5 through an Internet chat room where he described a mouse that had passed away due to maximum character limitations of the program he was using for such chat sessions.
Zimmerman has released four full-length albums since 2005; Get Scraped was released through ZOOLOOK Records in July 2005; Vexillology by Play Records followed a year later introducing his signature musical style, mixing progressive house with techno.
In 2007, Zimmerman launched his own record label, mau5trap, in partnership with Ultra Records and Ministry of Sound. Their initial release, Random Album Title, featured Kaskade singles such as Faxing Berlin and I Remember on it.
