Brett Goldstein has an ambitious schedule ahead of him after the success of Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso and launch of high-concept MRC drama Soulmates, but still makes time for live stand-up performances.
Subjectify was lucky enough to catch him at this weekend’s Jam in the Van event in Los Angeles – check it out below!
Ted Lasso quickly gained attention as one of the premier streaming series. Starring Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham with Goldstein penning its scripts. Both actors have won Emmy awards.
Friday Night Lights’ formula has been updated for British audiences with this series. Starring Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard, its creators – co-creators Joe Kelly and Sudeikis — initially imagined it during improv gigs with Boom Chicago troupe. Sudeikis taught himself football (aka soccer) by watching games on his PlayStation, and eventually earned himself the role as an inept coach.
Juno Temple joined as an expert publicist. The series is now entering its third season, though no word yet as to whether it will return for more seasons – another testament to the quality of writing and performance! Fans have been eagerly waiting for more!
Brett Goldstein has had an eventful few years as the co-creator of Apple TV’s Shrinking. This cathartic grief comedy earned him a 2022 WGA Award nomination and renewal for season two.
The series follows Jimmy, an emotionally troubled and grieving therapist whose life is in constant crisis. The show has earned praise, particularly its casting: The Ringer described Harrison Ford’s Paul as an “absolute revelation”, while Vulture noted how his dry delivery of one-liners and verdicts against younger colleagues’ antics provided balance against any schmaltz and added gravitas to an otherwise airy series.
Goldstein has also written for popular television shows like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Freaks and Geeks and Hoff The Record as well as contributing to anthologies such as Soulmates by Black Mirror-esque author Mike Carey and Soulmates by Mike Carey and Black Mirror’s creator Charlie Brooker. Additionally, his podcast ‘Films To Be Buried With’ offers intimate discussions between Goldstein and special guests.
This week on our podcast, we welcome back Brett Goldstein. In addition to starring on (and writing for) Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso and writing for AMC Soulmates anthology series, Goldstein co-created and executive produced AMC Soulmates an anthology series set fifteen years into the future when scientists have developed a test which can determine who your soulmate might be.
It features Jason Sudeikis and Imogen Poots in its cast. The show explores the concept that science can help determine your soulmate by measuring how heart beat and breath rate change during intimate encounters.
As its title indicates, each episode features its own distinct setting and cast of characters for an immersive short film experience. Goldstein’s writing extends across genres–cathartic comedy to dramatic drama–proving his versatility as an author. Furthermore, he hosts and creates the award-winning podcast Films To Be Buried With which features candid discussions between him and other special guests.
Brett Goldstein has made quite an impression professionally as both Roy Kent in Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, and co-showrunner for AMC’s Soulmates anthology series. Additionally, he’s started his own podcast and stage production!
Multi-hyphenate performer Mark Asaro also hosts Films to Be Buried With, an entertaining podcast in which guests discuss movies they adore and why. It has struck a resonant chord among listeners while remaining consistently enjoyable.
