He’s a guitar virtuoso
Warren Haynes has played in three of the greatest live bands in rock history for three decades: Gov’t Mule, Allman Brothers Band and Grateful Dead. Additionally he’s collaborated with numerous musicians ranging from blues artists like Little Milton and Derek Trucks to hard rock groups Corrosion of Conformity and Phil Lesh & Friends.
Haynes has earned himself a place as one of the hardest working men in show business, yet his creativity continues to surpass all expectations. His latest project, Man in Motion, takes us back to Southern Soul music from the 1960s and 70s; when gospel, deep soul music, and its affective emotions were not considered trendy or avant-garde.
Haynes assembled an all-star lineup in support of his new record, featuring Gov’t Mule bassist Kevin Scott, two-time Grammy award-winning drummer Terence Higgins, and saxophonist Greg Osby – as well as Small Faces/Rolling Stones pianist Ian McLagan (twice Grammy-winner!) as well as folk-blues singer Ruthie Foster whose soulful harmonies recall Stax Records Memphis soul repertoires.
He’s a songwriter
He often draws inspiration for his songs from personal experiences and observations, adding an authentic tone and layer to the music. As an accomplished songwriter he has amassed an enthusiastic fan base and uses his platform to raise awareness and raise funds for charitable initiatives.
Haynes was raised in a family that treasured music, and this early exposure helped mold his musical style. With an ability to blend bluesy licks with rock-solid rhythms effortlessly and a talent for creating powerful yet poignant melodies supported by emotive vocals – his musical influencers helped shaped his style of composing melodies with compelling and emotive vocals that drive home his message of positivity and peace through melody creation.
Alongside his work with Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule, Warren has collaborated with numerous other musicians. Additionally, he has produced solo albums. Warren has also participated in charitable projects, including Asheville’s annual Christmas Jam benefit concert which donates proceeds from ticket sales directly to local charities; this annual event has grown into one of the country’s largest fundraisers.
He’s a producer
Haynes has an intuitive ability to connect with soul music. His talent is evidenced in his choice of vocalists for Ashes and Dust, particularly Ruthie Foster who can deliver songs like Merry Clayton with stunning harmony-heavy barn paint effects or delicate jazz melodies a la Hendrixian jazz improvisation.
Fans who know Haynes from his work with Gov’t Mule or various extensions of The Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers Band may be taken aback at what he has created for Dreams & Songs Symphonic Experience tour. Haynes shares what attracted him to this project as well as why now seems like the appropriate time.
He’s a solo artist
Warren Haynes of Asheville is an exceptional solo artist known for the emotional depth and thought-provoking lyrics in his songs. An accomplished guitarist himself, Haynes’ live shows always leave fans delighted; whether performing alongside full band or solo acoustic settings his talent shines through.
Haynes and his band are currently touring in support of his soulful album. Alongside him is Gov’t Mule bassist Kevin Scott, guitarist Mat Abts, drummer Terence Higgins and jazz saxophonist John Medeski from Medeski Martin & Wood jazz fusion group.
At their latest concert, Haynes and his band performed some songs from their new album – including “Man in Motion,” featuring an extraordinary duet between him on guitar and backup vocalist Alecia Chakour on voice – as well as some classic Gov’t Mule and Allman Brothers tunes including a rendition of “Banks of the Deep End,” enhanced with full orchestra.
