Turnpike Troubadours have made waves in country music over the past several years, reaching new heights of success while maintaining an incredible following in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and Red Dirt genre. But their success came at a cost; their lead singer/songwriter Evan Felker suffered from addiction issues leading to an indefinite hiatus between 2019-20; on August 25 they will release A Cat in the Rain as their comeback album which showcases their unfaltering commitment.
Turnpike’s other members were able to stay sane during its three-year hiatus by keeping close with family and friends, such as guitarist Ryan Engleman joining Reckless Kelly; fiddle player Kyle Nix launched an additional project called the.38s; bassist RC Edwards took up college basketball; drummer Gabe Pearson continued working on various personal projects; yet all five remained committed and dedicated to Turnpike, resulting in live shows at dance halls and honky-tonks across Texas;
While A Cat in the Rain explores themes of rediscovery and rebirth, its true message lies within perseverance and gratitude. Through all that the band endured to keep their dream alive, they emerged stronger than ever, more committed than ever to fulfilling it.
As soon as Felker took to the Cain’s Ballroom stage in Tulsa, his 1,700 fans gasped as they recognized six silhouettes as being Turnpike Troubadours – and began cheering wildly!
Turnpike launched into their performance immediately, playing several songs from A Cat in the Rain including their cover of “Mean Old Sun” and first single “Chipping Mill.” Their newly written tune, “Brought Me”, made its live debut, too; its poignant ode to those who’ve helped us through tough times while maintaining Turnpike’s characteristic blend of humor and straightforward storytelling.
Felker and crew eschewed banter during their performance, which kept it on-track and focused on music alone. Audience response was overwhelming; people applauded as they left the stage. Days later, the band sold out three nights at Red Rocks; it seemed as if their comeback would only continue.
