Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB), led by husband-and-wife team Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, is one of modern music‘s most celebrated live acts. These 12-piece rock and soul masterminds combine world-class musicianship with contemporary American musical influences into a remarkable live experience that is nothing short of legendary.
Every TTB show unleashes a torrent of incredible grooves, triple-threat vocals, twin guitar assault, backed up by double drummers and three-piece horn sections – all propelled forward by TTB’s trademark double drummers and three-piece horn section.
The Grammy Awards is always a musical family affair and this year was no different. Husband-and-wife duo Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi won the Best Blues Album award over some tough competition, beating out solo albums from Lauryn Hill and Alison Krauss (who has already won it twice). Trucks is an Allman Brothers Band longtime member while Tedeschi served as its former touring singer.
No matter if they’re covering an Allman Brothers classic like “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright”, or something from their own catalog, The Honeybears deliver American roots music with urgency and drama through collaboration and improvisation; something evidenced on I Am The Moon.
Bostonians from Massachusetts and Jacksonville natives combine to form a bluesy rock sound. FUV’s Joe Mathieu spoke with them after their three-show residency at Orpheum Theatre.
Susan Tedeschi, an expressive singer-songwriter, and Derek Trucks, one of the premier slide guitar players around, have both earned high renown as members of their respective bands and as guest artists on other albums.
After 2009’s Already Free, they decided to combine their respective husband-wife bands into an eleven-member ensemble dubbed Revelator and showcase this ideal balance between voices and instruments.
Revelator takes the band to new levels both musically and geographically. Their eclectic blend of traditions – Delta blues, Memphis soul, Sixties rock and Seventies funk – seamlessly meld together under Revelator’s distinctive sound, giving the group their own distinct identity.
Tedeschi Trucks Band members are all accomplished musicians connected through talent, familiarity and friendship. This ensemble features drummers J.J. Johnson and Tyler Greenwell; bassists Kofi Burbridge (from Allman Brothers Band), keyboardist Sonya Kitchell and Dave Ryan Harris as well as tenor saxophonist Maurice Brown and trombonist Saunders Sermons from Allman Brothers Band (both were once members).
Although “Everybody’s Talkin'” became famous through its use in Midnight Cowboy, its origin can be found two years earlier with folk singer Fred Neil recording it for his 1967 self-titled album. Harry Nilsson made his version popular after using it in Midnight Cowboy but Fred Neil himself lived out his days peacefully until his passing away in 2001 in Florida.
Tedeschi Trucks Band already earned itself a Grammy with Revelator–an album which lit up 2011 like great records used to before its release–and with this live album of classics and originals that showcases their incredible musical prowess, they captivated listeners everywhere with Revelator. Now back with another double LP full of Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s amazing sound; from folk, Delta blues, funk gospel rock–this double LP truly showcases this band and all their influences; featuring all their influences while giving listeners what they came for in 2011!
After their highly praised debut album Revelator and 2014’s lively live collection Everybody’s Talkin’, Made Up Mind finds the band fully formed. Boasting elements of blues, folk, classic rock and gospel with impeccable musicianship from husband/wife duo John and Amy Stewart-Adams along with their ever-shifting ensemble, Made Up Mind stands as one of 2013’s essential releases.
Tight and tough, Tedeschi and her band‘s songs generally forgo Trucks’ expansive slide guitar tendencies in favor of tight arrangements showcasing Tedeschi’s hearty vocals. From belting out blues numbers like set 2-closing “How Blue Can You Get?” or singing soft folk/soul ballads such as album closer Calling Out to You, Tedeschi shows an impressive range.
Whoever has seen TTB live knows improvisation is a big factor, yet on Made Up Mind they show an elegance that cements them as one of today’s premier touring acts. If you haven’t discovered them already, this album will turn you into one.
