String Cheese Incident has built up a loyal following of music lovers over 30 years with their improvised jam sessions, drawing comparisons with Grateful Dead as an act. While their music remains accessible and enjoyable, SCI has also become more than a mere band; instead they serve as an oasis of creativity where spiritual connections can flourish.
SCI is proud to have made a pledge of their tour schedule to give back to communities they visit; one of their pioneering acts to advocate for “Green” tours was SCI themselves! Their philanthropy activities have enabled organizations such as Conscious Alliance and HeadCount to form.
String Cheese continues its tour despite the tragic passing of drummer Jesse Aratow last month at age 30; their recent visit to Red Rocks wasn’t without sadness and reflection: Keller Williams sang of how “The Rollercoaster must roll to its lowest point before it can climb back up again,” before closing the weekend out as their solo performer at SCI’s final show of the weekend.
Though SCI still performs over 100 gigs annually, their members have begun slowing down as they age and gain maturity; nonetheless they remain committed to pushing their unique hybrid groove in new directions while connecting with audiences at every gig they play.
Breathe is a testament to SCI’s ongoing growth as artists, moving them ever closer towards reaching the goals they’ve set out for themselves. This album contains both fan favorites and newer songs that demonstrate SCI’s range – bluegrass to heavy rock to psychedelia and beyond!
SCI has grown both individually and as an organization through hard work. Their business includes a management arm, gear and merchandising company, ticketing service and travel agency to enable fans to follow them from venue to venue as they travel across America. While some members may tire of all of the hard work involved in running an empire like SCI’s is exhausting at times, its members remain dedicated to spreading their music‘s magic by performing night after night at venues where SCI plays.
Though SCI will never reach the heights of The Dead, they have certainly proven that a band can succeed while remaining true to its principles and loyal fan base. Thanks to Cheese fans who travel far and wide in support of SCI’s music and each other, Cheese will continue its legacy through loyalty of its followers who show up at each venue, showing support throughout their entire musical career and continuing to show it. They have built an indestructible community around themselves which they will continue nurturing throughout their ever-evolving musical journey.
