String Cheese Incident’s members have an abundance of creativity that often spills over into many different projects, as proven by each member having at least a couple side projects outside their primary endeavor.
They amassed their following through traditional means – touring extensively and forging strong ties with fans. Furthermore, they launched the SCI Fidelity record label and pioneered destination music festivals like Texas Eclipse and Hulaween.
String Cheese Incident has long put music and its fans first. One of the first bands to embrace digital downloads and the internet for music distribution and live recording purposes directly to fans, they even established ticketing and merchandise companies of their own in order to better serve the community.
The band boasts an eclectic blend of musicians that offer up a myriad of creative output. Kyle Hollingsworth tours with members from both The Motet and SuperCollider; in addition, he sometimes collaborates with Michael Kang as part of his solo band.
Founding member Bill Nershi may never have anticipated standing on the stage at Red Rocks 48 times; yet, that has happened and every show sells out! That dedication from SCI’s fan base has cemented them as one of Colorado’s premier neo-hippie jam bands west of Mississippi; SCI also shows remarkable versatility ranging from electrified bluegrass, progressive rock, fusion and funk music styles.
Since 1993, The String Cheese Incident has carved itself a distinctive niche within America’s music scene. Over this time, they have shared amazing experiences, incredible moments and groundbreaking involvement that have earned them wide acclaim both musically and for their community spirit and charitable works.
Their music captures Colorado’s freewheeling spirit and freedom-loving attitude, inspiring by sunny skies over 14,000-foot mountains, swift rivers and desert landscapes. Indeed, this outdoor passion brought these musicians together before ever being formed into a band.
The String Cheese Incident first garnered national attention with the release of their debut studio album, Born on the Wrong Planet, in 1996. Two years later they issued Carnival ’99, a double-disc set that showcased their ability to switch genres seamlessly, while later still they released A String Cheese Incident featuring stripped down folk and bluegrass tunes by band.
As much as the band is famous for their extraordinary live shows, they also devote significant effort to writing and recording their own music. This studio album marks their return after an absence and was recorded while touring.
Lend Me A Hand is an honest and emotive collection of songs by The Shires that explore themes of loss, aging and resilience – a dramatic departure for this band who are usually best at performing live improv.
Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Hiss Golden Messenger, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats and Waxahatchee) produced this record that features a wide variety of styles and influences, from psychedelic bluegrass to island jams. This album showcases their creativity and talent; though some fans might prefer more rowdy jam band vibes; nonetheless it remains one of modern music‘s most unique acts.
String Cheese Incident shows are always great entertainment – whether or not you like their music! Their shows feature vibrant color displays, loud tunes and colourful costumes; making for an amazing time at every show.
