At a time when it seems every band has broken up or disbanded, The Avett Brothers stand as an extraordinary testament. From North Carolina come Scott and Seth Avett – two brothers easily classified as Americana but capable of transcending genres – who keep producing phenomenal music year after year, album after album. Their legacy stands as an anomaly within contemporary music today.
Before their upcoming album release, The Avett Brothers took to the stage to perform some of their latest material. Starting off the night’s performance was “Talk on Indolence”, an upbeat track sure to get people dancing with its slow drawl and captivating harmonies and instrumentation that had everyone mesmerized by its slow drawl and smooth draw backs – one of many that would show off The Avetts Brothers acoustic charm and country music heritage.
From there, the band moved onto “Cheap Coffee,” an eclectic song featuring multiple styles and sounds. It opens with Scott singing a cappella before soft organs and chiming ride cymbals begin playing softly behind him, followed by soft organs and soft organ chords that later give way to electric guitar chords ringing out before eventually giving way to pizzicato strings that add extra texture to the track.
“Love of a Girl,” an energetic rock song that examines modern love, was another highlight. The Avett Brothers engaged their audience through high-energy Appalachian-stomping sway that kept them riveted – it’s evident they will continue touring with such gusto!
As part of their announcement this year, Ramseur Records unveiled their upcoming self-titled album release by The Carpenter and Closer Than Together in 2016 and 2019, respectively. Veteran producer Rick Rubin helmed its creation – with recording sessions taking place in Malibu’s Shangri-La Studios, Nashville Tennessee, Concord North Carolina as well as their home base location of Concord North Carolina.
The Avett Brothers remain one of the most powerful forces in contemporary music with their self-titled album featuring their signature blend of country, folk and Americana mixed with some rock conventions. There are many great tracks on here that illustrate why so many consider them essential listening!
