In spite of being at the epicenter of a pandemic, The Avett Brothers have been busy. Sam’s Place marks their full-length return to Ramseur Records/Thirty Tigers – their label from which 2007’s Emotionalism came – but this nine-track offering offers more than mere nostalgia: It seeks to highlight sacredness within everyday existence.
North Carolina ensemble The Carolina Chocolate Drops have long explored both the saddening and comical sides of life through music; for decades they’ve mined themes of love and loss with poetic lyrics that draw out both emotions. But with their latest recording they go further still by developing their message while keeping its spirited energy intact – something many listeners adore about them.
Scott and Seth Avett were joined on this album by drummer Bob Crawford and bassist Jason Irwin as well as guest musicians like singers Gillian Welch and Mary Lou Lord, banjoist Chris Thile, fiddle player Joe Kopp, saxophonist Paul Shaffer, and drummer Vinnie Amerigo – as well as Grammy-winning producer Rick Rubin who served both as an expert advisor and guiding light during its creation.
While their record captures their current emotions, it also looks forward to their future plans. This fall will mark The Avett Brothers’ live show hitting stages everywhere as Swept Away: an original musical featuring their songs debuts with successful runs already taking place in Berkeley and Washington DC with future locations to be announced shortly.
As well as their album and theater production, The Avetts have also been offering their no-line boutique Music Vacation experience across the nation this summer, and recently announced an all-new weekend trip at Topeka’s Miramar Beach Resort for November 2024.
All night, the band kept up a lively pace with both familiar and brand-new tunes, particularly during “Pretty Girl from Greensboro,” when crowd members’ feet seemed to explode with joyousness. Even during a brief mid-set break, energy didn’t fade before they returned for an unforgettable encore performance that left no one disappointed!
As soon as the lights came on, Avett Brothers were welcomed with cheers of “Avett! Avett!” and more foot stomping. By the time their final song of their set “Kick Drum Heart,” had finished playing, audiences had become an overwhelming ocean of love – from hugs shared among front rows by Avett brothers themselves to people walking up and down the aisles collecting donations for victims of Colorado wildfires.
The Avett Brothers & Little Feat have left behind an unparalleled, 50-year legacy with their signature combination of world-class musicianship and creative, unique songwriting. Blending California rock, funk, folk, jazz country music and New Orleans swamp boogie, they have developed an enormous fan base over time while touring and releasing records with infectious joy.
