String Cheese Incident has made their mark in the jamband scene by combining genre-defying music with its Colorado roots. Their latest release Lend Me A Hand released in September shows their focus on songwriting as they produce something truly original and impressive.
SCI’s album also stands apart from its usual mix of rock, funk, reggae and electronic influences found in its shows.
String Cheese Incident members have long demonstrated an exceptional creative streak over their three decade history, which extends into their side projects as well.
Michael Kang of String Cheese quickly took off as soon as they took to the stage, switching seamlessly between mandolin and fiddle during their raucous rendition of “Restless Wind” and an energetic take on “Doin’ My Time”, with Jason Hann and Keith Moseley providing a solid backbeat that allowed for organic improvisations that are the hallmark of their music.
Kyle Hollingsworth Band hit the stage next with an engaging set that kept everyone entranced. Hailing from Colorado, they combined elements of funk, bluegrass and rock n’ roll while adding some Phish-esque influences into their sound – definitely something worth checking out when they visit your area!
Michael Kang plays guitar, mandolin and violin for String Cheese Incident – an improvised music band known for blending genres. Kang formed this project alongside Bill Nershi in 1993 while performing at ski hill gigs in their native Crested Butte Colorado; performing music during Paradise Lift line rides as well as at local bars to entertain skiers with melodies that resonated acoustically while receiving free ski passes as payment.
SCI was among the pioneering groups to use the Internet to communicate show dates to fans, and are considered leaders in a new form of doing business that puts music and community above profit-seeking. SCI has established various businesses such as ticketing and merchandise companies to better meet the demands of its ever-expanding fanbase.
SCI is also dedicated to giving back to their communities and was one of the pioneering groups that promoted “Green” tours and shows. Additionally, members’ creative juices often flow freely outside SCI as side projects continue to surface.
Kyle Hollingsworth has long established himself as one of the most innovative and virtuosic musicians in the jam band scene. As keyboardist for String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth has demonstrated his abilities as a versatile musician able to contribute, collaborate, and communicate in various musical environments.
Hollingsworth took to the Nevada City stage with his own band, Kyle Hollingsworth Band (KHB), to entertain an eager audience. From opening with “Racer X”, KHB made their presence felt with their hard-driving instrumental funk number that showed they meant business.
KHB’s set was marked by its fluidity, with songs flowing effortlessly into each other. When KHB introduced an original instrumental take on an SCI classic “Galactic,” crowd reaction was overwhelming with wide eyes of wonderment from audience members. Kyle Hollingsworth Band proved an irresistibly exciting surprise for its sold out audience with their ability to incorporate elements of rock, jazz, and world beat into his compositions; making the concert truly an exciting evening!
Aquarius-born Keith is both intelligent and eccentric; these qualities can be found in his bass playing as it always pushes boundaries. Be it high energy jig or more emotive ballad music – his tunes will surely move listeners.
String Cheese Incident have pioneered a new way of creating bands, using social media and the Internet to build direct relationships with their fans and give back to communities they visit.
Lend Me A Hand is SCI’s return to its roots, after several albums that demonstrated their ability to move fluidly between genres ranging from electric bluegrass, progressive rock and jazz and funk. Produced by Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Hiss Golden Messenger, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats), it serves as a poignant yet celebratory reflection on love and loss.
