Steve Martin and Martin Short have delighted audiences for decades with their natural comedic chemistry across TV, film, and live performances. Generation X kids may recognize them from Three Amigos with Chevy Chase as out-of-work actors mistaken for Mexican gangsters; Gen Zers know them from Father of the Bride franchise when Martin played uptight dad (Martin) while Short embodied flamboyantly accented wedding planner (Short). However, even recent fans can attest that these old friends continue to get better and funnier as time goes on; most recently seen in Only Murders In The Building as well as their Netflix special An Evening You Will Never Forget for the Rest Of Your Life!
Martin and Short have enjoyed a lasting friendship since first co-starring in Three Amigos together in 2001. Since then, their chemistry has come through in skits on SNL as well as comedy tours; one notable performance at Toys “R” Us Children’s Fund Gala involved them trading turns playing banjo and singing to one another; an act which they later reprised at national tours such as A Very Stupid Conversation and The Funniest Show in Town at the Moment.
This year, they’re back collaborating for Hulu original series Only Murders in the Building’s second season – an investigation-themed crime drama with Selena Gomez as a private detective investigating murders on Broadway theater. Their roles as Charles and Oliver in Only Murders in the Building echo those from Three Amigos and Bowfinger; with its blend of fish-out-of-water humor similar to Three Amigos and Bowfinger as they try to return into show business; making them perfect fits for an interactive crime series featuring two veteran performers trying to restart their careers after falling off.
Starting December 20, you can catch them back together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for another hilarious and edgey performance that feels more like two friends than pros sharing their deepest, darkest thoughts with one another. Watch two highlights below.
