Steve Martin and Martin Short Reunite For Only Murders in the Building

Martin and Short have delighted audiences for decades with their natural comedic chemistry across television, film and national live performances. Last year they returned together in Netflix special An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life as well as appearing alongside Selena Gomez on Hulu series Only Murders in the Building.

The Jerk

The Jerk is widely considered one of Martin’s breakthrough roles, leading him to star in many high-profile film roles throughout the ’80s. Directed by comedy legend Carl Reiner with Bernadette Peters and Jackie Mason among its cast, it features sharp satire mixed with silly antics while remaining true to Martin’s signature brand of humor: sweet yet sharp humor.

Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid

After years of success on SNL and in movies like Father of the Bride, Martin Short decided to take a more serious route with Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, an amusing takeoff on classic film noir crime thrillers which proved immensely popular with audiences and cemented Martin Short as a versatile performer.

It is a film that manages to be both funny and tragic at the same time, providing us with a window into Martin and Short’s relationship as well as looking back on what used to be one of comedy’s hottest genres.

Bud Molin and composer Miklos Rozsa brought an authentic noir look and sound to this film, with composer Rozsa later going on to compose soundtracks for other classics such as Double Indemnity and The Asphalt Jungle. Kino’s Blu-ray remaster comes from an older master so its detail may not match that of an updated scan but still looks solid.

Only Murders in the Building

After half a century in comedy, Only Murders in the Building gave septuagenarian comedian John Martin his first TV series. Debuting on Hulu in 2021 and quickly becoming its most-watched original comedy program. Earning 17 Emmy nominations (three of which went directly to Martin), including three for producer/co-creator/writer duties alone.

Martin Short and Selena Gomez star as three true crime enthusiasts caught in an investigation. This gritty whodunit has recently been renewed for season 4, and Deadline reported that Meryl Streep will reprise her recurring character Loretta Dunkin.

Martin and John Hoffman of Grace & Frankie (Grace & Frankie, Looking) co-created and wrote this series while executive produced by Short, Gomez, Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal’s 20th Television production company. Filming will take place in Los Angeles this season – marking a departure from Season 1, where Charles, Oliver and Mabel investigated Sazz Pataki’s murder from their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building.

The Three Amigos

Steve Martin and Martin Short have long been comedy icons, but their friendship truly blossomed during filming of Three Amigos! 36 years ago. Since then, the two have formed an unbreakable bond: going on multiple comedy tours together as well as co-starring in Father of the Bride films and celebrating major career milestones together – Short even giving an amusing speech when Martin received an AFI Life Achievement Award in 2015.
