Martin, 78, and Short, 73, first joined forces in 1986’s Three Amigos and have remained close ever since. Martin has toured together extensively over time while also appearing together in films and TV shows like Father of the Bride series and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building with Selena Gomez. They’ve even stood beside each other during major milestones in their careers such as Martin’s AFI Life Achievement Award honor. For PEOPLE magazine’s cover story feature interview both comedians revealed what qualities they admire most in one another’s presence and personalities.
Martin has proven himself an impressive multi-hyphenate artist since first emerging on the scene as a standup comic before transitioning into acting and singing roles, earning numerous awards and nominations over his long and celebrated career – from appearing on Saturday Night Live in 1975, through hit movies of the 70s & 80s (The Jerk, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid), family comedies (Roxanne & Parenthood), to dramatic flicks (L.A. Story & Bowfinger).
Short has earned numerous fans and accolades throughout his illustrious career in film and television. Starting off his acting career with Godspell on Toronto stage before debuting on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and joining Second City improv troupe, Short then made his SNL breakthrough with performances like Frankenweenie, Madagascar 3 and Clifford; critically-acclaimed films Three Amigos! and His Netflix Special with Martin An Evening You Will Forget Forever or An Evening That Was Fun Right At That Moment are among others.
Short is known for his stellar acting performances as well as his innovative compositions of bluegrass albums and plays, which have won him multiple Grammys and a Tony award for their success on Broadway. Furthermore, Short published his book of comedy pieces Pure Drivel as well as writing his memoir Born Standing Up.
Though both actors are reaching the end of their careers, they remain as playful and joyous today as when they first started working together. Their chemistry on and off screen is palpable and it’s clear why they have become two of America’s favorite entertainers. To read the entire story, pick up PEOPLE on sale Friday April 13.
