Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a natural feature located 6,450 feet above sea level. This geological phenomenon was formed where Great Plains and Rocky Mountains meet.

Geology

Red Rocks Amphitheatre has become legendary for its incredible acoustics and has been used as the backdrop to some of the most iconic live music albums ever released. Additionally, this park provides hiking trails that run along scenic ridgelines while boasting interesting geologic history.

Ship Rock and Creation Rock are two huge rock formations on either side of an amphitheater that were formed approximately 300 million years ago by sedimentary rocks eroded away from what’s known as the ancestral Rocky Mountains, which parallel today’s Front Range. Dinosaur fossils have even been discovered among these rocks!

Discover the geologic history of the area at the Park’s Visitor Center and Trading Post, while picnicking is welcome if your own food is brought; concessions tend to be expensive.

History

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is an iconic concert venue and National Historic Landmark that draws world-class acts to perform. Renowned for its extraordinary acoustics, many artists have recorded numerous live albums here.

John Walker got it all going when he invited musicians to perform on a temporary platform between Ship Rock and Creation Rock (then known as Red Rocks). Through Walker’s reputation, Denver Parks department agreed to purchase Red Rocks for $54,133 in 1936 and build an amphitheater using assistance from Civilian Conservation Corps and Work Projects Administration.

Today’s visitors can enjoy the grandeur of an amphitheater, tour the museum on site, explore dinosaur fossils and more in this 868-acre park. Additionally, hiking trails, group fitness classes and picnicking under ever-evolving Rocky Mountain skies await them here.

Accessibility

Red Rocks provides music lovers with a truly unforgettable experience, and strives to make it accessible for all. This venue features ramps and designated wheelchair-accessible seating with prime views of the stage.

Visitors with disabilities are invited to park in the Upper South lot and use an accessible shuttle that will bring them directly to their first row seats. Shuttles will be available a few hours prior to each show beginning.

Red Rocks Park and Venue accept certified service animals; however, they must remain with their owner at all times. Food and nonalcoholic beverages in factory sealed containers under 32 ounces are also allowed inside Red Rocks. Its accessibility also extends to people using sign language or those living with hearing loss.

Parking

Concertgoers at Red Rocks will benefit from ample parking on-site, which opens two hours prior to door time and staff will direct guests where to park.

Tailgating is allowed prior to events at Red Rocks, though certain rules must be observed. Open flame grills are forbidden while alcohol consumption should only occur within parking areas.

Parking at Red Rocks can be challenging during a sold-out show, so carpooling or using rideshare services are highly recommended to reduce pre and post-show traffic congestion while simultaneously helping reduce its environmental impact.

Transportation

Concertgoers can enjoy breathtaking vistas from any seat in its amphitheater while its natural acoustics offer an immersive audiovisual experience.

Parking spaces fill quickly, making early arrival essential. Security lines may also take longer than anticipated with pat downs, bag searches and wand searches all part of the process.

Shuttle services are offered to assist guests with navigating and parking in an orderly fashion at large venues, while providing a safer alternative should they plan on drinking or simply don’t wish to drive after attending shows.

It also hosts Easter sunrise services during sunrise services on Easter morning.
