Berkeley — To mark their 60th birthdays, vocalist Maynard James Keenan decided on something special – taking two non-Tool bands Puscifer and A Perfect Circle on tour together – under the Sessanta banner.
As part of their preparations for their tour, the trio has released a three-song EP entitled Sessanta E.P.P.P. which will be distributed March 29 by Puscifer Entertainment and written collaboratively by Keenan.
Primus has released nine groundbreaking alternative funk and progressive rock albums since 1984 in El Sobrante, California. Credited with popularizing alternative funk music in mainstream audiences such as Foo Fighters and Marilyn Manson, Primus also explored themes of existentialism and spirituality through an introspective lyrical style. Established by bassist Les Claypool and guitarist Larry LaLonde; currently comprised of drummer Tim Alexander and singer Maynard James Keenan as members.
The band first gained recognition during the early ’90s with their debut album Tales from the Punchbowl, featuring their most successful single to date: “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”, with accompanying claymation video. Two less popular singles followed; however, over time their distinct brand of alternative funk music and live shows eventually garnered them an audience.
Primus has made waves in the music industry for years with their ever-evolving lineup and sound, which fuses various genres from alternative funk to punk and metal. Primus’ music explores themes such as existentialist spirituality while earning them a reputation for pushing genre conventions further than most bands do.
On a recent performance at the Hollywood Bowl, three bands — Puscifer, A Perfect Circle and Primus–joined forces to honor Maynard James Keenan’s 60th birthday with an exhilarating show that displayed his vast influence.
The night opened with three songs from Sessanta E.P.P.P, a three-way split EP of new material by each band featuring songs co-written by Keenan and featuring A Perfect Circle’s “Kindred,” Puscifer’s “No Angel” and Primus’s “Pablo’s Hippos.”
The remainder of the night featured mini-sets by each band, performing one song from their respective album releases over the past year: A Perfect Circle’s Eat the Elephant, Puscifer’s Existential Reckoning and Primus’ Conspiranoid. Listen to all three-song EP tracks below as well as find tour dates for these groups!
Primus is a progressive rock band with over two decades of history, known for their eclectic sound and off-kilter live show performances. Primus’ unique playing style incorporates extensive use of slap bass; their influences range from funk, punk and metal music styles.
Les Claypool on bass, Tim Alexander on drums and Larry LaLonde on guitar form this band. Influences come from all genres, making their style dynamic. One reason for their fame may be their unique musical sound that makes their songs so compelling to audiences worldwide.
They have produced multiple albums and EPs since 1995; their debut offering, Suck on This was released then followed by They Can’t All Be Zingers as their greatest hits album in 2006. Furthermore, they have made numerous DVDs, with their most recent one being Blame it on the Fish.
Conspiranoid is an outstanding song from Primus’ latest offering that shows their return in full force. A mix of their signature funk sound with prog metal elements make this track truly special; I would love to hear more like it from them in future albums!
This album‘s other songs are equally as enjoyable, featuring fantastic drumming by Alexander and excellent guitar work from LaLonde (with some superb solos on each song). I recommend it highly to any progressive rock music lover and Primus fans in general! This album should definitely not be missed!
