Daniel Caesar shot to international stardom with the release of his 2014 EP “Praise Break”. Co-founding an independent label and receiving two number 1 R&B singles as Grammy awards are testaments of this success. His music ranges from soulful melodies to energetic, uptempo pop.
Crowds cheered when he sang his song about love being more powerful than money, “Japanese Denim”. His stunning guitar solo featured alternate-picked chords.
Grammy-awarding artist Nathan McCann is revered for his soulful voice and introspective songwriting style. Beginning his career independently, he built up his fan base through critically acclaimed EP releases Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim’s Paradise (2015) before finally debuting his full-length album Freudian on August 7, 2017 to wide critical acclaim.
Daniel Caesar had always dreamed of becoming a singer. At 17 he left home for Toronto where he quickly began performing in various shows while connecting with producers such as Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett.
Caesar draws his musical inspiration from childhood experiences such as unrequited love and faith, as well as contemporary R&B artists Frank Ocean and Kanye West. On Case Study 01, Caesar continues his legacy while showing off a more playful instrumental palette.
Daniel Caesar was raised on soul and gospel music, which is evident in his debut album Never Enough. Born into a religious household, after graduating high school he moved out from home often working dishwashing shifts at restaurants to make ends meet while staying with friends or sleeping rough while following his dream to become an artist.
Praise Break and Pilgrim’s Paradise earned him recognition independently before becoming part of Toronto’s rising hip-hop/R&B crew BadBadNotGood. His vocal prowess has been refined through years of singing with his family in church; now used to convey emotion and meaning in songs about religion, love and money.
On this project, Caesar works with several talented artists. “Valentina” employs an infectious melody and percussive production to illustrate Caesar urging his partner to cheat; on “Homiesexual,” Ty Dolla $ign joins Caesar crooning over an ominous guitar melody; plus there’s even an unnamed collaboration titled H.E.R who remains unknown at present.
There are albums that seem tailored to soundtrack a special event in your life, and Daniel Caesar’s debut EP Praise Break certainly falls into that category. Filled with emotionally stirring songs that tug and pull at your heartstrings, this record will leave you feeling moved to tears.
Caesar expanded his musical palette on CASE STUDY 01 by featuring features from some of the industry’s premier artists – from Kali Uchis’ retro groove, Syd’s chill futurist sound, and H.E.R’s updated traditionalism – helping bring Caesar’s vision to fruition. These guest musicians serve as an impressive collection of female voices who helped realize his vision.
Caesar remains humble and grateful for the support of his fans despite this newfound success, having continued as an independent artist through Golden Child Recordings with producers Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett. We look forward to hearing more of Caesar’s memorable tunes on his third album release date in 2017.
After the release of his debut EP Praise Break, Daniel Caesar was signed to Republic Records. This marks an incredible accomplishment for this young Canadian musician, who has already begun making waves in the music industry with soulful melodies backed by his signature vocals.
On his new album Never Enough, Caesar displays his emotional introspection that has become his trademark. He tackles topics such as heartbreak, self-love and religion through introspective songs on this album with experimental production that sets it apart from its contemporaries.
Notable tracks on this album include “Toronto 2014” and “Cool,” featuring sparse instrumentations to allow Caesar’s voice to explore topics like regret and nostalgia. Furthermore, tracks like “Pain Is Inevitable” and “Vince Van Gogh” utilize distorted minor chords to reflect his existential anxieties.
