Lord Huron is a Los Angeles band that seamlessly mixes folk, Western, rock and pop sounds together into something completely unique to itself. Frontman Ben Schneider hails from Okemos, MI where his older brother’s vast record collection helped mold his musical tastes. Later on in life he also became familiar with iconic singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen; these influences can be heard clearly within Lord Huron’s sound, which can best be described as indie-folk-western-Eastern; an artistic evolution that Lord Huron have refined over time – culminating in their latest album Long Lost.
Listening to Long Lost is like taking a trip back in time – an indefinably nostalgic tribute to Whispering Pines Studios and time’s shifting perspective; from presence, absence and heartache through all stages.
Travel and exploration are central themes on this album. The band masterfully captures this sense of wandering with each song on it – particularly the title track! I can imagine Ponce de Leon roaming Florida swamps searching for his fountain of youth; unfortunately he eventually failed at his quest.
Though their music displays an adventurous spirit, its impact is especially evident on songs like the ballad “Your Other Life” and folk-rock ballad “Ton Autre Vie.” These tracks explore topics including desire to be with someone even at all costs while considering inevitable loss, death and separation that we all face throughout life.
Lord Huron called upon these spirits for Long Lost, creating an immersive musical world where listeners could also become lost. Beyond its lush string arrangements and echoing announcers, Lord Huron also conjured an alternate reality television show called Alive From Whispering Pines that featured Tubbs Tarbell as Tubbs Tarbell was its ghostly caretaker and created an array of fake ephemera that can be sought out online, such as clothing worn by Phantom Riders or drumsticks used by Hefty Lefty himself!
Long Lost is the result of much hard work and creative exploration by the band. They’ve been rewarded with a record that will resonate with fans for years to come – whether its cinematic qualities or relatable themes; Long Lost makes you feel as if you’ve been here before while leaving you wanting more.
