Heilung are known for being passionately dedicated to their music production, and as such their concerts often offer something more than the average gig experience. Their authentic Viking-influenced folk music and captivating live performances resemble ancient pagan rituals more than regular metalhead fare, creating an experience more similar to travelling into another realm than simply going to another concert.
On Wednesday, Heilung brings its distinctive Nordic folk sound to Chesterfield’s Factory as part of their fall 2023 US tour. Established in 2014 by Danish producer Christopher Juul, guitarist Kai Uwe Faust and vocalist Maria Franz — who met through Viking reenactment — Heilung’s mission is to “amplify history”. Their two previous albums Ofnir and Futha capture prehistoric Northern European cultures with modern synths mixed in with traditional instruments like horse skin drums, Hindu ritual bells and even Kai’s own bones (yes even for percussion).
Drif doesn’t limit itself to studio work alone: their forthcoming album Drif is set to explore other great rudimentary civilizations beyond Europe, connecting modern society with our early roots by means of its uniquely mystic sound.
Heilung has something to satisfy all types of music fans – be it haunting and atmospheric or driving and epic. Christopher says, “the longer we live, the more we lose sight of what was”; Heilung believes their music can help reconnect people to what was once lost.
Heilung’s mission extends far beyond simply recreating a show in terms of looks and sounds; rather, they want to build relationships across cultures by getting to know people through music. Their members wear handmade, historically accurate costumes while playing all traditional instruments from the Viking and Iron Ages (such as drums). Their latest release Futha serves as the feminine counterpart of Ofnir by taking lyrics from rune inscriptions on weapons and armor preserved during Ofnir.
Gamers will recognize Kai and Maria’s music as perfect accompaniment for conjuring images of female orcs chanting to their gods while casting spells, with their costumes embodying any priestesses they encounter while exploring dungeons.
