Deadmau5 Album Review

Joel Thomas Zimmerman, better known by his stage name Deadmau5, is one of EDM‘s most prolific producers. Boasting eight studio albums and an unforgettable live show, along with many fans that continue to appreciate him despite his cantankerous personality and short fuse, Deadmau5 has also established himself as an innovator within EDM with his massive stage shows, green lit mau5heads, and non-traditional approach to his music.

Deadmau5 first gained notoriety in the early 2000s as an unexpected breath of fresh air in what had become an overly routine and genre-centric dance music scene. He revolutionized it all through his use of multiple keyboards, drum machines, and an assortment of hardware and software; truly a pioneer of contemporary electronic music scene who still remains one of its most acclaimed DJs today.

Since his career began, Canadian producer Daniel E. Young has never settled for routine. Instead he strives to push himself in new directions and experiment with various styles – something which has proven highly successful over time. Never once has he settled for what’s mundane!

One of Deadmau5’s key moves was joining Astralwerks Records in 2013, propelling him towards mainstream success and leading him to release his eighth studio album W:/2016AL in 2015 which went on to be an incredible success and earned him a Grammy nomination. Before this release – 2014’s while (12), an ambitious double album showed Deadmau5 still had much potential within EDM culture.

Deadmau5 began his album with “Faxing Berlin,” an ode to an obsolete form of communication that has since become emblematic of his sound. From there on out, his album took a slower approach with tracks like “Word Problems,” “Soma,” and the title track displaying deeper, mysterious house music composed primarily of low rumbling basslines; his final track “Strobe” stands out as an experience and would make an excellent closing track at club nights or parties.

Though some aspects of Deadmau5’s music remain consistent, no two albums sound the same. Each takes you somewhere unexpected and makes for an unforgettable listening experience. He loves surprising his audiences; each album acts like a maze with twists and turns leading you to unfamiliar places – which has helped to keep him at the top of his industry for so long.
